The Month of Muharram
by Ahlul Bayt DILP Team    2/15/2003 11:42:15 PM

The crescent moon of the new Islamic year, 1424 A.H., is expected to make its appearance on Wednesday, the 5th of March, 2003. Although in Western culture the New Year is often marked with celebration and joyous expectations for the future, Muslims worldwide enter the new year with mourning and a heart full of sorrow for the events of Karbala that dominate the spiritual culture of this month. In the year 60 A.H., on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Muslim calendar, tragedy shook the Muslim ummah. The political authority of the time took it upon themselves to mercilessly slaughter the innocent blood of the grandson of the Prophet (s), Imam al-Husayn (a), along with his family members and close companions.
