Ibn Miskawayh reported in "Nadim al-Farid" a letter that Ma’mun, the caliph, had written to the Bani Hashim and he mentioned from it his statement:

"No one from the Muhajirin supported the Messenger of Allah, blessings and salutations of Allah on him, like `Ali b. Abi Talib. He supported him and protected him with himself and slept in his bed. Then he continued after that to adhere to the frontiers, confronting brave warriors. He did not flinch from confronting an adversary (in battle) nor flee from an army. He was strong hearted, given authority over all, and none was given authority over him. He was the most severe of people in punishing the polytheists, the greatest of them in Jihad for Allah, the most knowledgeable of them in the religion of Allah, the most devoted of them in reciting the Book of Allah and the most conversant of them about the lawful and the forbidden things. He is the possessor of the mastership (wilaya) in the hadith of Ghadir Khumm, and the one who is referred to in the statement of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and salutations of Allah on him: ‘Your station in relation to me is that of Harun’s in relation to Musa, except that there is no Prophet after me.’"
