Mahitaji ya zama zetu hizi yanamlazimisha kutathmini maswali mengi yenye umuhimu na sio kuridhika na tathmini zake za awali. Mfumo wa haki za ndoa na majukumu ya kifamilia ni miongoni mwa masuala haya.
Suala la msingi kabisa juu ya kifamilia, ni iwapo mfumo wa ndoa unajitegemea na hautangamani na mifumo mingine yote ya kijamii na una vigezo na mantiki take maalum, au ni moja tu ya mifumo mingi ya kiajmii na kuwa vigezo na falsafa zile zile zinazotumika kulishugulikia suala hili kama ilivyo kwa mifumo mingine ya kijamii.
