Surah Al-Fatiha – The Opening

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. (1:1)

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. (1:2)

الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

The Beneficent, the Merciful. (1:3)

مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

Master of the Day of Judgment. (1:4)

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help. (1:5)

اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Keep us on the right path. (1:6)

صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ

The path of those upon whom Thou hast bestowed favors. Not (the path) of those upon whom Thy wrath is brought down, nor of those who go astray. (1:7)

Note: The Surah contains the Essence of the Qur'an. Hence, it is also called the ‘Umm ul-Qur’an’ i.e. the Mother of the Qur’an. Every verse of this surah is so comprehensive in its meaning that it is said that the meaning of the Holy Qur’an as a whole has been synthesised in this Surah. Through this one single surah, man is educated with the essential knowledge of the basic fundamentals of his life in this world and the life hereafter.
