Sayyid (also spelt Saiyed, Seyit, Seyd, Said, Syed, Sayed, Sayyed, Saiyid, Seyed and Seyyed) (Arabic: سيد, Persian: [sejˈjed]; meaning "Mister"; plural: Saadat or Sadat Arabic: سادة sādah is an honorific title denoting people (feminine version: sayyidah سيدة) accepted as descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and his cousin Imam Ali through his grandsons, Imam Hasan ibn Ali and Imam Husayn ibn Ali, sons of Muhammad's daughter Fatimah and son-in-law Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib). Female sayyids are given the titles Sayyida, Syeda, Alawiyah or Sharifa. In some regions of the Islamic world, such as in India, the descendants of Muhammad are given the title Amir or Mir, meaning commander, general.
Allah (SWT) the Glorious, has saved Imam al-Sajjad (AS) in Kerbala to
keep the Imamate which is compulsory not only for Islam and Muslims
but also for the whole universe. Sadaat are not only the grand
children of Imam Husain (AS) but also the grand children of Imam Hasan
(AS) who are also called Hasani Sadaat. In fact all the Grand Children of Bani
Hashim, the grand-father of the Holy Prophet (SAWA) are called
Well, there are also a lot of descendants of Imam al-Hasan (A) especially in places like Morocco. It is recorded to have been said that if Imam al-Husayn (A) was killed, there would be no grandson of the Prophet (S) alive on the earth anymore, in the sense of the son of the daughter of the Prophet (S). This is true, as Imam Hasan (A) had already been martyred by that time.
However the line of the Imamate went through Imam al-Sajjad (A) so the line of the imamate would have been cut off in that way.
Anyway, it is a good question and demonstrates excellent critical thinking skills!
This claim is based on cultural view in the sub continent and among some believers who have influence from that culture. In Islam, we do not have any discrimination between believers from any background, language, ethnicity, etc.
Those who claim that Sayyeda is forbidden from marrying a Non Sayyed need to present evidence and they will never be able to present any authentic evidence as our authentic narrations from the Prophet (SAWA) and Ahlul Bayt (AS) confirm that any believer man can marry any believer woman whether Sayyed or non Sayyed. Our leading Ulama and Maraaji' of Taqleed who are Sayyeds have given their daughters in marriage to non Sayyed believer e.g.
1. Ayatullah Sayyed Mohsin Al-Hakeem (AR).
2- Ayatullah Sayyed Abul Qasim Al-Khoei (AR).
3. Ayatullah Sayyed Ruhullah Al-Khumaini (AR).
4. Ayatullah Sayyed Mohammad Redha Gulpaigani (AR).
5. Ayatullah Sayyed Mohammad Saeed Al-Hakeem.
Cultural point of view should not overcome religious teachings. The damages of creating such restrictions will make thousands of our daughters suffer and it can ruin life of some of them. No doubt, those who caused this suffering will be responsible in this life and hereafter.
We finally tell them to ask the Marji' of Taqleed whom they follow who are the most knowledgeable about the teachings of the Prophet (SAWA) and Ahlul Bayt (AS).
as salam alaikum
there is no relation between a Sayyid girl marrying a non-Sayyid man and the sadaqah that is not allowed on Sayyids. So it doesn't make any difference that a Sayyid girl is from the progeny of Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, in this regard. In Islam, Muslims are encouraged to marry a pious and religious people, committed to the Din in order to please Allah Almighty, be they Sayyids or not.
With prayers for your success.
The black turban is the turban of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA). This fact is mentioned in both Shia and Sunni books.
The Sayyed Ulama wear black turban which is the turban of their great grand father, the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).
If the green shawl is understood in certain cultures or societies as a special dress of Sayyeds, it might be then misleading if non Sayyed wears it in that society. Same like black turban (Amamah) which is understood to be a special dress for Sayyed scholars only.
- When we say that we follow Ahlul Bayt (AS), we mean the Infallible Ahlul Bayt who are Ali, Fatima, Hasan, Husain and the nine Infallible Imams who are the son and grand sons of Imam Husain (Ali Al-Sajjad and Mohammad Al-Baqir and Jafar Al-Sadiq and Musa Al-Kadhim, and Ali Al-Ridha, and Mohammad Al-Jawad and Ali Al-Hadi and Al-Hasan Al-Askari and Al-Mahdi (AS).
- There are millions of Sadat whom we respect because of our respect to their grand father, the Prophet ( SAWA), but none of them is Infallible, nor Imam but only the 12 Imams.
- We and all Muslims were been ordered by Allah ( SWT) through the Prophet ( SAWA) to keep following and obeying the Book of Allah (Quran) and the Progeny of the Prophet (Ahlul Bayt) who are the Infallible Imams (AS). The compulsory following is to The Infallible Imams but this following and obedience is not for all the Sadat.
- Respecting all the descendants of Ahlul Bayt (AS) who are the Sadat is very good and it is a sign of love and respecting the Prophet and his Holy Progeny. Wasalam.
The Special treatment to Sadat who are the grandchildren of the Prophet Muhammad ( SAWA) is based on the respect and love to the Prophet ( SAWA) and his Holy Progeny ( AHLUL Bayt) (AS).
The great services rendered by the Prophet and his Ahlul Bayt to the whole Muslim Ummah can not be thanked at all by us, but Allah (SWT) has told the Prophet in Quran to tell Muslims : I do not ask you ( for my efforts ) any remuneration but only the love and kindness to my Progeny. ( Sura 42, Verse 23).
The Prophet (SAWA) told Muslims : Love Allah for what he is showering on you from His bounties, and love me for the love of Allah, and love my Progeny Ahlul Bayt for my love.
( Tirmithi , number 3792,
and Al-Mustadrak by Al-Haakim 3/150)
He also said in another authentic Hadeeth : No one from you Muslims will be real believer in Allah until he loves me and my Progeny Ahlul Bayt more than his love to himself and his family.
Kanzul Ommal 70/91.
We must show our respect to the grandchildren of the Prophet (SAWA) and Ahlul Bayt (AS) for the sake of Allah and love and respect to the Prophet and Ahlul Bayt.
Poor Sadat are not allowed to utilize Zakat from people, that is why Allah has kept for them the right in half of the Khums as far as they are really needy.
The history of Muslims has hundreds of incidents of the sufferings of Sadat by the enemies of Ahlul Bayt and it is still going on in many places.
Respecting the grandchildren of the Prophet and Ahlul Bayt is one of the signs of real Faith and respect to the Prophet and Ahlul Bayt.
The rulings of the marajah can differ on this, but in general, the majority allow you to give the Sahme Sadat to Seyeds (with some conditions) who don't have enough money to meet their expenses...
Double check with your specific marja first- these rulings can be found in the Risalah in the section under Khums...
Sahm e Sadat is the right of poor Sadat who are pious and practicing religion and do not have enough money or income to meet their livelihood expenses.
If the poor Sayyed is in need for marriage expenses, and has no income which can be enough for such expenses, then it will be allowed to give him from Sahm e Sadat.
It is against the teachings of the Prophet (SAWA) and Ahlul Bayt (AS) to create a condition in marriage which was never put by Islam. Caste condition is simply un-Islamic .
Delaying the marriage of a female who needs marriage, for no real Islamic valid reason is a sinful act.
The Infallible Imams were from Bani Hashim yet they got married to pious ladies out of Bani Hashim and even out of their language and culture. There is no question of caste in marriage in the teachings of Ahlul Bayt (AS).
The authetic Prophetic Hadeeth says very clearly : If marriage proposal comes to you from a person whom you accept his faith and manners, you should accept it, otherwise the earth will be corrupted with Dispute and wide spread evil.
إذا جاءكم ٬من ترضون دينه وخلقه فزوجوه ، إن لا تفعلوه تكن فتنة في الأرض وفساد كبير.
