Employment is a relationship between two parties, usually based on a contract where work is paid for, where one party, which may be a corporation, for profit, not-for-profit organization, co-operative or other entity is the employer and the other is the employee. Employees work in return for payment, which may be in the form of an hourly wage, by piecework or an annual salary, depending on the type of work an employee does or which sector they are working in. Employees in some fields or sectors may receive gratuities, bonus payment or stock options.

Earning a halal income is an act of worship and is pleasing to Allah swt. Yes, it is true that some jobs may also fit into different catergories too. For example a job which involves charity related work such as helping the needy people or orphans could fall under the category of mustahab jobs. You may then get jobs which fall under the category of makruh such as selling Kafans or working in a slaughterhouse. Such jobs although not haram, become makruh as a kafan seller may wish more people to die for sales to go up, and the one who slaughters animals for meat, may become used to such an action and cold hearted.

What one should be careful of is falling into a job which is in the haram category making ones income unlawful.

Muslim is not allowed to cheat or deceive others. If you do an exam for others, you will be claiming that you are that person. This is a type of cheating.

Isha . Fajr . Salah (Prayers) . Dhuhr . Employment

If you are unable say your prayers from Zuhr to Isha due to work, how are you supposed to make them up? Do you have to pray all of them before Fajr or do you pray them at their own respective timing?

As you know, for us Muslims, prayer takes priority over absolutely everything. We plan our lives and our daily routine around prayer. We select our form of lifestyle and work based on how we can excel in our faith and get closer to God.

Prayer, which is the most effective way to do this, must of course be done in its perfect form, and within its allocated time.

Anything that becomes an obstacle for that, we must eliminate, even if it means loss of money or changing of work opportunity.

In any job description, you are able to see if you can meet their requirements and also your religious requirements. If they do not give you any breaks, even toilet breaks, then in today's world that would be illegal and inhumane.

I am sure you are able to find a few minutes, during your break, to perform your prayers, quickly, and get back to work.

If under no circumstance are you able to take a break, or pray within the shar'i timeframe of the salat, then have trust in Allah ta'ala, who is the Razzaq, and pursue other work opportunities that would suit your Islamic values and human rights as well.

Wife . Responsibility . Employment

If my new wife already has a job and pays her own rent, is it still my Islamic responsibility to pay it though we have come to an understanding that she will pay her own for the time being?

Islamic Rules say that all the livelihood expenses of the wife ( including housing and other usual expenses) is the responsibility of her husband even if she is a rich person. If your wife accepted to pay her own rent not knowing that it is the responsibility of her husband, you must tell her the truth and pay for her rent. If she wants after knowing her right of housing on you, to voluntarily pay her rent, that will be favor from her on you, but you are not allowed to force her or pressurise on her to do so.

Is it necessary for the husband to work outside if instead the wife wants to work outside and the husband is happy to be at home and they are both happy with this arrangement?

No, there is no "necessity" for the husband to work outside. The husband can work from home, or maybe due to circumstances be unemployed.

In regards to your question, there are two important points:

1. In Islam, it is wajib for the husband to cover expenses, as nafaqah is the husband's duty. If the wife wishes to pay for things, it is not her shar'i duty, and it is out of her goodness.

2. For the long term, it will not be good or mentally healthy for the husband to be at home all the time, with no work, or future ambitions, or being occupied with at least something useful for himself, his family or for the community. Therefore, it would be advisable that the husband somehow keeps himself busy in this case.

Khums . Money . Employment

Should I pay Khums even though I do not work but am still getting pocket money?

In the case of khums payment, it is not dependent on whether you work or not. It is a matter of what you have when your khums date comes. Should you have any savings that you have not paid khums on before, and it is your pure excess and savings from that year, then you will need to pay khums on it.

In addition to this, another case of khums being applicable on you would be items that you own and are new and you have not used.

I work at a health insurance company as an operations specialist. My job is answering people's questions about the cost of ear tubes or physical therapy. I don't sell insurance. Is my job permissible?

The insurance contract between the insurer ( insurance company) and the insured is permissible in Sharia because it is similar to any conditional gift هبة مشروطة as the insured gives certain amount of money ( premium) to the company with a condition that if any thing wrong happens to him or his health or property etc, the company should pay for it fully or partly. This is a permissible contract.

Your work in insurance company is permissible.

Is it permissible for me to work for a Western government's foreign service where I would advocate for my country's interests in the Middle East or elsewhere?

It is allowed for every Muslim to serve his country in any field which does not do injustice on others. Your country's interest should be in the interest of people and should not support the aggressors who might be friendly with some of your political leaders. You as a Muslim are obliged to serve peaceful people in your country and every where, and never support injustice. Our case as Muslims is the justice for all human beings and even for everything. Justice for people of Palestine for example, might not be an aim for many western politicians, but we must do everything possible in peaceful and legal way to support justice. Muslim officer must be an ethical officer and not just a blind officer.

My husband works for a bank. We keep arguing about his job as it is based on interest but he does not wish to change it. Is it permissible for a wife and children to eat and spend from this money as I don’t want to leave him?

Working in interest in not permissible in Islam, but banking jobs include trade, investments, import and export etc which are permissible. If your husband works only in interest and nothing else, then his work is fully unlawful and his income is unlawful, but if he works in interest and other lawful jobs, then his income include lawful money from which you can utilize.
