Ahl al-Bayt

Ahl al-Bayt (أهل البيت‎, Persian: اهلِ بیت‎), also Āl al-Bayt or Ahlul Bayt, is a phrase meaning, literally, "People of the House" or "Family of the House". Within the Islamic tradition, the term refers to the family of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. In Shia Islam the Ahl al-Bayt are central to Islam and interpreters of the Quran and Sunnah. Shias believe they are successors of Muhammad and consist of Muhammad, Fatimah, Ali, Hasan, and Husayn (known collectively as the Ahl al-Kisa, "people of the mantle") and the rest of the Imams from The Fourteen Infallibles.

Yes, the hadith exists. However, some people use it to promote movements or groups that are active today, and that is not correct. The hadith is speaking about the time AFTER the reappearance of the 12th Imam (i.e. the Mahdi), an event that will be accompanied by major signs. We will know when it happens, and it has not happened yet!

The hadith is mentioned in Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 53, p. 148, no. 6 and 7. One says that after the Mahdi (A) appears, the other Imams will be brought back to life and live and die, and then after them, 12 "mahdis". The other just speaks of 12 "mahdis" after the "mahdi".

Since this hadith is about something predicted for the end of time, it isn't possible to say whether it is correct or not. There is consensus on certain general predictions for the end of time - such as the return of the Mahdi, the raj'ah or return to life of those of most intense faith and most intense wickedness, and some major signs. However, details like this may or may not be accurate.

There is no evidence that the wives of the Prophet (S) or Fatimah al-Zahra (A) covered their faces.

Face-covering (niqab) became common among Muslims around or after the time of the caliphate of Imam 'Ali in Kufa, and so it seems reasonable that his daughters and those who came after them covered their faces since this was a social norm then at that time, at least for women of certain social classes.

(This is of course based on historical records we have of that time, and God knows best.)

All Shia and Sunni scholars believe the the Faqeeh has authority in the interest of the religion and Muslims. Shia scholars have discussed in their books the limits of this authority as a matter of scientific research. While all of our scholars believe in the authority of the Faqeeh, they have different opinions about its limits and boundaries . Al Naraqi was a well known Shia Scholar who wrote about this subject, but no scholar said that the authority of Faqeeh is equal to authority of infallible Imams.

Thank you for your question. Most of the Imams (as) died from poisoning and evidence for this is found in reports to that effect concerning the death of each Imam.

Tamim is a well known tribe in Arabia and those who belong to this tribe are called Tamimi. Tamim is not from Bani Hashim which is the family of the Prophet Muhammad ( SAWA) . All Ahlul Bayt belong to Bani Hashim. Tamim is a respected tribe but different tribe.

A practical way to get such counts is to use specialist hadith software or websites. It will need a good command over Arabic as such advanced and comprehensive search tools are not available in English.

Thank you for your question. The Infallibles is a translation of the word Maʿṣūmīn in Arabic, which means those people that are protected from committing sins. They are protected because of the knowledge they have concerning the different sins and their outcomes. They are also protected from performing what is second best, meaning they always make the best choices because of their wisdom. These are very high stations that are only possible by Allah, His Wisdom and His Will and has been vastly theorised in Shii theology, philosophy and mysticism. However, the basis of this understanding of the infallibity of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) is the scriptural sources.

Thank you for your question. When ijma and the aql are included in the sources of Islamic law in the school of Ahl al-Bayt (as) it is with specific terminological meanings that are not the same as other schools of thought.

Ijma is a source of law if the view of the Imam (as) is included within the view of the community. Not when the community is agreed without the opinion of the Imam (as) being included.

The aql is a source when specific intellectual principles are used that are certain, such as the necessity (wujub) of something dictates the necessity of its introductory aspects. For example, the wujub to make wudu for prayer dictates the wujub of exhausting all means to find water to perform that wudu. Further details of these principles can be found in the books of usul al-fiqh.

May you always be successful.

There are many Sunni scholars by this name. Ibn Al-Arabi Al-Maaliki (Abu Bakr)  ( Died 543 Hijri) is a Sunni Shaikh who wrote Al-Awaasim Minal Qawassim العواصم من لقواصم. He was the person who claimed that Imam Husain (AS) by fighting against Yazeed, went against the teachings of his grandfather the Prophet (SAWA). He was clearly away from Ahlul Bayt (AS) and follower of Bani Umayyah who were ruling Andalusia where he was living.

Ibn Arabi (Mohyiddin) (Died 638 Hjri) , the Sufi Sunni scholar,  is a different person who wrote Al Fotoohaat Al-Makkiyyah الفتوحات المكية . His books contain right and wrong things as he was not strictly following Ahlul Bayt (AS). He wrote some statements praising Ahlul Bayt (AS) but also wrote praising some enemies of Ahlul Bayt.

We have to be very careful when we read for such persons.

When we recite Durood (Salawaat) we mention the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) and his Progeny (Ahlul Bayt)(AS) and Hazrat Ali (AS) is the head of Ahlul Bayt (AS) after the Prophet (SAWA).

Imam Ali (AS) was brought in Mubahala as Nafs of the Prophet (SAWA) while Hasan (AS) and Husain (AS) where brought as the sons of the Prophet (SAWA).

Imam Redha (AS) when Al-Ma'moon asked him about he greatest tribute of Ali in Quran, said : Mubahala when Allah mentioned Ali as Nafs of the Prophet (SAWA).

1. We find in Quran that Allah (The Glorious) orders people to be with be The Truthful who are the Infallible  (Al-Tawbah 119).

2. We also find in Quran that Allah (The Glorious) orders the believers who repent and need forgiveness to go through the Prophet (Al-Nisaa, 64). This means that reaching to Allah need going through His most humble servants and never away from them.

3. Even in performing the worship of Hajj, when Allah ordered prophet Ebrahim to call people for Hajj, people are asked to come to the Prophet(يأتوك رجالا ) to perform this important obligatory worship (Al-Hajj 27). This is very clear that worshipping Allah must be under the guidance of His most humble servants and not away from them.

4. The best way to reach to the nearness of Allah is to go through His most Humble servants who ae the Prophets and the Infallible Imams. They are the best teachers and  best examples and going through them teaches us the real obedience of Allah (The Glorious).

5. Those who misunderstand this concept need to think sincerely; Can we get knowledge without going to the knowledgeable scholars? So, how can we learn to be obedient and humble to Allah (The Glorious) with out going to His most humble servants?

6. We love, obey and seek the Waseelah and Shafa'ah of the Prophet (SAWA) and his Ahlul Bayt (AS) not only because we were been ordered in Quran to seek their Waseelah (Al-Ma'idah 35 and Al-Israa' 57) but also to be with them and under their guidance which the real guidance of Allah (The Glorious).

This claim is untrue. Zayd Ibn Ali himself was a follower of Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq . He never claimed that he is the Imam. Even when we was asked because he was more aged than Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq, he replied that he is a follower of the Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq (AS).
