حدّثنا عفان قال ثنا حماد بن سلمة قال أخبرنا علي بن زيد عن عدي بن ثابت عن البراء، قال: كنا مع رسول الله في سفر؛ قال: فنزلنا ‏بغدير خم، قال: فنودي: الصلاة جامعة، وكسح لرسول الله تحت شجرة فصلّى الظهر فأخذ بيد علي فقال: «أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي أَوْلَى ‏بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ»، قالوا: بلى، قال: «أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنّي أَوْلَى بِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ»، قالوا: بلى، قال: فأخذ بيد علي فقال: ‏‏«اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلاَهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَوْلاَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ وَالِ مَنْ وَلاَهُ وَعَادِ مَنْ عَادَاهُ»، قال: فلقيه عمر بعد ذلك فقال: هنيئًا لك يا ابن أبي طالب، ‏أصبحت وأمسيت مولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة.
