وقال أحمد في الفضائل: ثنا عفان، ثنا حماد بن سلمة، ثنا علي بن زيد، عن عدي بن ثابت، عن البراء بن عازب قال: كنا مع رسول ‏الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فنزلنا بغدير خم ، فنودي فينا الصلاة جامعة، وكسح لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بين شجرتين، فصلى ‏الظهر وأخذ بيد علي وقال: اللهم من كنت مولاه فهذا مولاه، قال: فلقيه عمر بن الخطاب بعد ذلك فقال: هنيئا لك يا ابن أبي طالب، ‏أصبحت وأمسيت مولاي ومولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة. وفي رواية: اللهم فانصر من نصره، واخذل من خذله، وأحب من أحبه وأبغض ‏من أبغضه.‏
