وأخرج الجلال السيوطى في الدر المنثور عن إبن أبي حاتم، وإبن مردويه، وإبن عساكر راوين عن أبي سعيد الخدري قال: نزلت هذه الآية على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم غدير خم في علي بن أبي طالب كرم الله وجهه.

Jalal [al-Din] al-Suyuti quoted in al-Durr al-Manthur on the authority of Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Mardawayh and Ibn `Asakir narrating from Abu Sa`id al-Khudri who said:
This verse was revealed on the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of Ghadir Khumm in reference to `Ali b. Abi Talib, may Allah illuminate his countenance.
