ورواه الشيخ عمر بن محمد بن خضر المعروف بالملا في كتابه في السيرة النبوية: عن البراء قال: أقبلنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏في حجة الوداع، حتى إذا كنا بغدير خم نودي فينا الصلاة جامعة، وكسح لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تحت شجرتين، فأخذ النبي ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم بيد علي، ثم قال: ألست أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم؟ قالوا: بلى. قال: ألست أولى بكل مؤمن من نفسه؟ قالوا: ‏بلى. قال: أليس أزواجي أمهاتكم؟ قالوا: بلى. قال: فإن هذا مولى من أنا مولاه. اللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه، فلقيه بعد ذلك ‏عمر فقال له: هنيئا لك يا ابن أبي طالب أصبحت وأمسيت مولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة.‏
