وقال عبد الله بن أحمد في فضائل علي لابيه: حدثنا حجاج، قال: حدثنا حماد، عن علي بن زيد، عن عدي بن ثابت، عن البراء - وهو ‏ابن عازب - قال: أقبلنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في حجة الوداع، حتى كنا بغدير خم فنودي فينا الصلاة جامعة، وكسح لرسول ‏الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بين شجرتين، وأخذ بيد علي فقال: ألست أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم؟ قالوا: بلى يا رسول الله. قال: ألست ‏أولى بكل مؤمن من نفسه؟ قالوا: بلى يا رسول الله، قال: هذا مولى من أنا مولاه، أللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه، فلقيه عمر ‏فقال: هنيئا لك يا ابن أبي طالب، أصبحت وأمسيت مولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة.‏
