Sufyan al-Thawri reported from `Abd al-Rahman b. al-Qasim from `Umar b. `Abd al-Ghaffar that when Abu Hurayra came to Kufa with Mu`awiya he would sit at Bab Kinda in the evenings and the people would sit with him. A young man came from Kufa and sat with him and said: "O Abu Hurayra, I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah, blessings and salutations of Allah on him, addressing `Ali b. Abi Talib: O Allah befriend one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is at enmity with him?"

He said: "Yes indeed."

He said: "Then I bear witness to Allah that you have befriended his enemy and have been at enmity with his friend." Then he stood up and left.

Transmitters report that Abu Hurayra would eat with children on the road and play with them. When he was governor of Medina he would give a sermon saying: ‘Praise be to Allah who has established the religion and made Abu Hurayra an Imam.’ The people would laugh at that.

While he was governor of Medina he would walk in the market, and when he came up to a person walking in front of him he would stamp his feet on the ground and say: ‘Give way, give way, the governor (Amir) has come’, meaning himself.

I say: Ibn Qutayba has mentioned all of this in Kitab al-Ma`arif in his biography on Abu Hurayra, and his statement regarding him is a proof, as he does not make an accusation against him.
