[Ta'rikh Baghdad, al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, Ahmad b. `Ali b. Thabit, Abu Bakr, Cairo: Maktabat al-Khanji (14 vols), 1349/1931, vol. 9, p. 252 ] He was one of the leaders (imam) of Muslims, and one of their great scholars. Scholars are unanimous over his position as an imam due to which he needs no recommendation in the presence of [qualities such as] mastery, accuracy, memorisation of the Qur'an, knowledge, asceticism and piety.
