[Biographical Notes in 'Reliance of the Traveller', Noah (Nuh) Ha Mim Keller, USA: Sunna Books, 1991 CE, x3 (pg. 1020) ] `Abbas ('13.4) is al-`Abbas ibn `Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim, the paternal uncle of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), and born before him by two years. In the pre-Islamic period of ignorance he was responsible for the custodianship of the Sacred Precinct and giving water to its visitants. He entered Islam and emigrated to Medina before Mecca was conquered by the Muslims, and died in Medina in AH 32 (al-Shifa (y116), 1.181).
