Hawza

A Hawza (Arabic: حوزة‎) or Ḥawzah ʿIlmīyah (Arabic: حوزة علمیة‎) is a seminary where Shi'a Muslim clerics are trained. The institutions in Najaf, Iraq and Qom, Iran, are the preeminent seminary centers for the training of Shi'a clergymen. However, several smaller hawzas exist in other cities around the world, such as at Karbala, Iraq, Isfahan and Mashhad in Iran, Beirut, Lebanon, Lucknow, India, Lahore, Pakistan, Europe and North America.

Bismillah,

Asalamu Alaykom,

it isn't necessary for everyone to go hawza although it is obligatory upon some to do so. Whether one is working or studying their secular studies, there is so much Islamic content online for one to learn from. One needs to see what their overall ambitions and goals are. If you feel you want to fulfill a secular career while also gaining Islamic knowledge, then this can be achieved. Yes, it may be at a slower pace, but it is possible.

There are many great online hawzas which will teach you many of the same books and sciences you would learn abroad in hawza.

Some of these online seminaries I can recommend are Imam Sadiq Online Hawza and Hujjah seminary. There are also other online shia hawzas too which you can study at your own pace and fit in with your schedule.

May Allah grant you knowledge

The uniform of Hawzah students is now commonly worn after completing a minimum amount of studies, no less than 5 to 7 years, qualifying him to have the moral standards of 'Ulama and efficiently share Islamic knowledge and answer shar'i questions.

This would also mean he has surpassed this time and studied full-time in a well-established and recognised Hawzah, like Najaf, Qom, Mashhad, etc.

With prayers for your success

That would be a good alternative, if you wish to pursue the sciences of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) and study to further your knowledge in your religion. I would encourage you to make sure you register with a recognised institute, supervised by a qualified mainstream scholar.

Main source of Islamic knowledge is from Quran and Hadeeth and both are in Arabic. If you want to study and understand Islamic sources, you will need to understand Arabic to understand Quran and Hadeeth. You can join Hawza and start studying in English as beginner, then learn Arabic to continue. There are many Hawza classes in English and other languages but only for beginners who will definitely need to learn Arabic to go further in Islamic studies.

Essential Islamic knowledge is which helps you knowing then teaching others the Islamic teachings. Arabic, Quran, Fiqh,, Hadeeth and Logic is to start with. Philosophy comes later after building a strong base of Islamic knowledge.

'Philosophy has many types including Islamic and non Islamic philosophy. You should not waste your time in non Islamic philosophy which does not guide you to Allah, nor help you guiding others to the teachings of Ahlul Bayt (AS).

Your teachers in Hawza should be able to assess your progress in your Islamic studies then guide you when you need to study philosophy.

Improving your Arabic before going to the Hawza in Najaf is very useful so that you can understand the classes in Hawza. You can improve your Arabic in Najaf itself by taking a condensed course in Arabic for few months before starting Hawza studies.

Yes. You can gain Islamic knowledge with out going to Hawza. There are many online courses and classes which you can attend from your own place. You can also request a local person who has studied Islamic knowledge to give you classes in your area.

First field which you may study is jurisprudence Fiqh فقه which teaches the day to day Islamic rules.

Knowledge precedes everything, especially if it is Ilahi knowledge, studying about your religion and learning the 'Ulum of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.).

Studying Hawzah is free of charge, and if for whatever reason a certain institute that offers Hawzah studies charge a fee, they are usually a bare minimum which any person would generally be able to pay.

Should your plan be to travel to Qom or Najaf to study Hawzah, you will only need to pay for the air ticket, and basic expenses to establish yourself there. The Hawzah will then give you some monthly wages.

This could eat into your budget you have allocated for marriage, but if you have become acquainted with Islam, you will know that the process of getting married should also be cheap and reasonable. By avoiding excessive things, you will also be able to get happily married.

Therefore, I do not see any of the two to be an obstacle, or affect the other, as long as you are making the correct choices. You do not have to choose one over the other, but rather pursue both at once.

With your tawakkul on Allah ta'ala, and sincere intentions, and dua, you will successfully accomplish both, in shaa Allah.

With prayers for your success.
