Employment

Employment is a relationship between two parties, usually based on a contract where work is paid for, where one party, which may be a corporation, for profit, not-for-profit organization, co-operative or other entity is the employer and the other is the employee. Employees work in return for payment, which may be in the form of an hourly wage, by piecework or an annual salary, depending on the type of work an employee does or which sector they are working in. Employees in some fields or sectors may receive gratuities, bonus payment or stock options.

All work is related to God because God created and sustains the cosmos.

However, certain jobs make us feel closer to God (such as useful, productive, and helpful jobs) and other jobs (such as those involving injustice, wastage, deception, etc) make us feel from God. Some jobs invite God's love and others invite God's wrath.

Medicine and the sciences inherently can lead a person towards God through consideration of the natural law of the universe and assisting humanity. Of course, in this day and age, there are many ways that they are twisted into other things (such as developing harmful food additives or biochemical weapons). So, this is really something that someone has to answer on an individual basis.

In general the believer is instructed to work for a living and work is considered an important part of worship, as long as the work is halal and healthy.

Oftentimes it is simpler not to work in the field of organized religion!

Thank you for your question. Through the intention of making your work for the pleasure of Allah, there is no work that has to fall outside of a person's path towards perfection. Helping people with their medical issues for the sake of God, or advancing science for the sake of the benefit of mankind for the sake of God are intentions that a person can have even if they do not speak about it with their colleagues.

May you always be successful.

Selling alcohol is forbidden in Islam. There are cases, especially in non-Muslim countries, where a Muslim is compelled to work in a place selling haram items. In such case the person should commit him/herself to find a new job and he should ask Allah to change his situation towards a better way of life.

With prayers for your success.

if a person find him/herself in a work environment with people of the opposite gender, because he/she doesn't find another job or any other reason, he/she should keep all the rules etiquettes that preserve his/her haya' and try to avoid extra-professional conversations. There is nothing wrong in sending greetings and work-related talk as long as they don't lead to haram consequences. Obviously one should strive also to be gentle, efficient and helpful in every circumstance. However "warm and friendly interactions" are not a necessity and should be avoided.

With prayers for your success.

Usually, supermarkets in non Muslim countries sell variety of items which are either allowed or Haraam. The money earned from selling the Haraam items is not permissible while money earned from selling Halal items is allowed. Try to know the ratio of it as much as you can.

You need to avoid using the Haram part of the money as much as you can.
