  • Islamic Just War Pacifism

Islamic Just War Pacifism By Hajj Muhammad Legenhausen The Imam Khomeini Education And Research Institute, Qom, Iran 16. Feb. 2008 ************* The issue of war and its necessity and fairness is a very common discussion subject in today's world when every day a new conflict arises around the world. The present paper aims to make a comparison between the justness of the Islamic war conditions and the Western war conditions. When is war justifiable? What are the conditions and differences? What is the Islamic just war pacifism? These are some of the questions that are answered in this paper. At the end of the paper the example of Zaynab, the daughter of Imam 'Ali (peace be with them), is given as indicating the kind of resistance to oppression in harmony with the just war pacifism. Abstract It is common to contrast pacifism with the just war theory. Pacifism holds that all wars are wrong, while the just war theory holds that under certain conditions, war is just.

And if in these few minutes given to me, I can just wet your appetite, then I believe I have offered my contribution. This pure wine will hopefully open a new window of hope

  • Living in Harmony - Islamic Perspective

Living in Harmony - Islamic Perspective Sheikh Mansour Leghaei ********* The present article is a brief study of the living in harmony from the Islamic point of view. Argument Mankind without religion is a pretty sorry lot. It has never been able to survive without faith. Yet, surprisingly agreement is never reached on such a vital subject. Thus, they have their own zealots who attack the religions of others, the result of which is intolerance and contention. Inter-group relations, especially when religion is also involved, are full of conflict and suffering. Martyrology feeds the myths, and prejudice adds bitterness to the legend. Political expediency and biased scholarship invest the legend with the status of history. To this end, men have been suffering throughout history from lack of toleration of others’ beliefs. With the cry “Deus Vult!”(God wills it) rivers of blood have flowed as a result of religious intolerance. Crusades, Roman Inquisitions and Holy

Imam Ali (a.s.) was a model of justice at a time when the world was not ready to bear it. It was for this reason that justice has been greatly emphasized in the Nahjul Balaghah. In Imam Ali’s speeches, sermons, letters, and short sayings, we see that in many many occasions he instructed the people to exercise justice as well as instructed the governors and his agents to apply justice and refrain from partiality, because, after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (S), people started again to do injustice and oppression was raising again, and it was because of Imam Ali's preaching against injustice and oppression that he was killed, thus removing justice and replacing it with oppression, which will continue until the day universal justice will be established.
