Ya Nafs! 2/5 - A Conversation With The Self
(2) Ya Nafs! O Soul! A Conversation with the Self A reading of Ibrahim b. Ali al-Kaf'ami's book Muḥāsabat al-nafs al-lawwāma wa tanbīh al-rūḥ al-nawwāma (مُحاسِبَةُ النّفس اللوّامَة و تَنْبیهُ الرّوح النوّامَة) For more information on the book: https://en.wikishia.net/view/Muhasabat_al-nafs_al-lawwama_(book)
'Ya Nafs, O Soul, and this is a new day, and it is a witness upon you. So be dutiful to Allah in it by obeying Him. And beware, beware of wasting it, for every breath of breaths and every sense of the senses is a great gem and invaluable. The best treasures in protection, care, and vigilance, is the life of a young man, for it is the end in dignity and preciousness. And beware of wasting it, if you are of the people of foresight.'
In the second entry, Kaf'ami once again reminds the soul of the importance of each and every single day. Every day is a new day, but each and every day that you wake up, it will be a witness to what you do on that day. It is like a new page a book, and you have the will, the free will, to write what you want to write in that book.
And he compares life to a treasure, to a gem or a pearl, which is so invaluable, and that you will protect it at all costs. Protect your life at all costs by ensuring that you are in obedience to Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, and that you are dutiful, that you are fulfilling your responsibilities and your duties towards Him, instead of wasting away your time and your life.
And lastly, he says to the soul, to be mindful and to be wise. The life that you have is a very short life, and the best treasure is the one that is protected and is taken into care with a lot of vigilance. In this case, it is our life, the life of a young man or a young girl. And if that life ends with dignity, then it is a good life. But if you are not a person of foresight, someone who cannot see beyond the lowliness of this Dunya, then you are someone who is wasting it, and Kaf'ami is warning us of that.
Wa as-salamu 'alaykum, wa Rahmatu Allahi, wa barakatuh.
