The majority of scholar’s state that it is mustahab for a man or a woman to perform the adhan and iqamah before the daily obligatory salah, rather the iqamah should not be neglected. It is mandatory to perform the iqamah after the adhan, and it is not valid to perform it before the adhan.
- 1. According to the ruling of Ayatollah Sayed as-Sadiq Shirazi saying this is wajib (obligatory) in adhan and iqama. He states, “Evidently the phrase ‘Ash-hadu anna Aliy-yan waliy-yu Allah’ is the integral part of both adhan and iqamah, as some narrations point to that.” (Islamic Laws by Ayatollah Sayed as-Sadiq Shirazi page 135)
According to Ayatollah Sayed Taqi Modaressi As for bearing witness to the walaya of ʿAli, and that he is the Commander of the Faithful ‘Ash-hadu anna Aliy-yan waliy-yu Allah), the jurists have said that this is not actually part of the adhan or the iqama; rather it completes the testimony that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger. Today, this has become an emblem of our sect, and therefore it is best to proclaim it in hope of divine reward.
Some of the other Shi'a scholars say that this phrase is not an integral part of Adhan and Iqamah, but that it is recommended (Mustahab).
