QUESTION:

What is the direction in the teachings of Islam for the sport of Weight
Lifting, is it approved, discouraged or otherwise. It was rumoured that
Islam encourages swimmming and other sports but is against Weight Lifting or
body building. Also, if you would explain the rationale behind the
recommendation.

ANSWER:

Perhaps any discouragement of this sport is due to the context in which we
usually see weightlifting and body building, which is an ostentatious
display of the body of men and women. If a person lifts weights with the
intention of developing himself/herself physically without the intention of
displaying the body, there should not be any objection from the perspective
of Islamic Law. Regarding weightlifting as a competition, there is no
objection. Again, the objections I think are related to dress (or lack of
dress) and the display of the body. Allah knows best.
