QUESTION:

What are the seven "heavens" (samawaat/sama'a) mentioned in the qur'an?

ANSWER:

The word SAMA (pl. Samawaat) comes from SUMUW, which means height. The
commentators have agreed that in relative to position of our earth, all that
is seen as high above is relatively SAMA', and the SAMAWAT may be referring
to the orbits above or even the planets.

Further discoveries in astronomical sciences may make this reference more
clear in the future.
