Ibn `Abd al-Barr

Ibn `Abd al-Barr (w40.5) is Yusuf ibn `Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn `Abd al-Barr, born in Cordova (in present-day Spain) in 368/978. A major hadith master (hafiz), Maliki scholar, and author, he was nicknamed the Hadith Master of the West, and was known for his travels throughout Andalusia in pursuit of hadith. He was appointed to the judiciary more than once, and authored works in hadith, Sacred Law, biographies of famous Muslims, canonical Koranic readings (qira'at), geneology, and history. He died in Shatiba in 463/1071 (al-A'lam (y136), 8.240).
