A slightly longer answer is: It is narrated that Imam 'Ali (A) was asked the meaning of the first prostration. He replied: It signifies saying O Allah, you created us from this – meaning the earth. The meaning of lifting the head is from it, You brought us forth. The meaning of the second prostration is to it You will return us, and the meaning of lifting your head again is and you will bring us forth from it again.
This is referring to the Qur'anic verse: ‘From it (the earth) We created you, to it We shall return you and from it We shall bring you forth once again’ (20:55).
Every order from Allah has great benefits for us whether we know the details or don't. Why do we pray Fajr prayers in two Rak'ats and Dhuhr in four and Asr in four and Maghrib in three and Isha in four Rak'at? This is the order of Allah which has great benefits known to Him and we may know little bit but our faith is firm that every order from Allah is for our benefits.
prostration (Sojood) has great benefits for us including reminding us about our origin from the earth and our end after this life inside earth, and making us more humble and many other benefits.
Allah Has clearly ordered us in Quran ( Sura 59, Verse 7) to follow the Prophet (SAWA) , and the Prophet (SAWA) never prostrated on carpet but only on the clay or earth and said ( Earth was made for me as a place of prostration and purification) جُعِلَت ليَ الأرضُ مسجدا وَطَهررا)
We Shia, prostrate on the clay (Turba) simply because we follow the Prophet (SAWA).
