Be Merciful Like The Prophet (S)
One of the greatest values of our beloved Prophet (S) was his mercy, Shaykh Nuru tells us why as Muslims it is essential that we follow in his footsteps and show mercy to others.
One of the qualities of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, is that he was a prophet of mercy, and he showed mercy to people irrespective of the their background.
As Muslims as believers, Qur'an made it very clear that our beloved Creator is a Creator of Mercy. We have a Merciful Creator. And in glorious Qur'an, He mentioned, "I made mercy obligatory upon me" (6:54). In other words, Allah show us His mercy on each and every one of us, irrespective of our background and where we are coming from.
And the mercy of Allah is that He sent Prophet of mercy to us. And that is our beloved Prophet Muhammad, salla Allahu 'alayhi wa alihi wa sallam. Whereby Allah mentioned in Qur'an- "Wa ma arsalnaka illa rahmatan li 'l -'alamin" (21:107). "Indeed, we have not sent you O Muhammad, but as a mercy for the universe."
Allah of Mercy sent Prophet of mercy to us. And the Holy Prophet of Islam, as per the teachings of Qur'an and his traditions, invite us to be merciful towards one another.
The Holy Prophet mentioned: "those who are merciful, the Most Merciful (Allah) will show mercy to them". Then he said: "show mercy to those who are on Earth, indeed, the One in heaven will show mercy to you."
This religion, my dear brothers and sisters, is a religion of mercy, and we are all expected to be manifestations of Prophetic mercy wherever we are, irrespective of whoever we are dealing with, either at school, or within our communities, or within our families.
You know, the Holy Prophet of Islam when he went to propagate and invite people to monotheism, he faced a lot of challenges but one thing he would do was to pray to Allah Tabaraka wa Ta'ala to guide this people. In one du'a, he said, "Allahumma ahdi qawmi fa innahum la ya'lamoon"- "Ya, Allah guide my people because they do not know." And one time he mentioned also: "Bu'ithtu Rahmatan li 'l-'alamin"- 'I am sent as mercy for mankind."
And so, therefore, the concept of mercy is central to the teachings of Islam. And as Muslim, you cannot settle until and unless, you are able to show mercy to people who are around you, and make sure wherever you are, people around you feel the mercy that is coming from you.
God Almighty mentioned in Qur'an, there is no other way for you to get Allah's mercy on the day of Qiyamah (Judgement) than to follow the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, salla Allahu 'alayhi wa alihi. He is Prophet of mercy and his Ummah (nation) are expected to be the Ummah of mercy.
