Halal Food Guide 4/11 - Eating From A Non-Muslim Franchise - Is It Halal?
Can I just repeat that for the online audience? So the question is if you go to a non-Muslim country, sorry if you go to a Muslim country but the restaurant is a franchisee with a non-Muslim name, then is it permissible to eat from that restaurant or would we consider them to be Muslim?
So, basically you're talking about, let's say McDonald's in Dubai or in Mecca or Masjid-ul Haram. Okay, just because they are haraam in Canada doesn't mean it's haraam over there. But you have to find out in places where it might be doubtful. There are some Muslim countries where the requirement would be that they provide halal meat.
I'm told in Pakistan, for example, that's considered to be an honour to invite you to the McDonald's. You know, but so you're assuming that there the meat would be halal. For example, in my visit two years ago to South Africa, because of the good number of Muslims there about 3 million Muslims, mostly from Indian background, who are very good very powerful in business sector of that country, because of the influence, all these fast-food chains, McDonald's, Burger King, Kentucky Drive, all these different names, wherever you go in South Africa, it's all halal. So, it's not that because it's haraam there it would be haraam over there also. You'd have to find out. If it isn't, if it's a Muslim country, you might be able to assume unless you have some doubts.
