Maytham Al-Tammar And His Loyalty To Imam Ali (A)

What is it that made these individuals gravitate towards Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as) to the point where they literally gave their throats; they gave their necks; they gave their tongues. When they brought Maytham al-Tammar to Ibn Ziyad. Maytham told him, "Subhana Allah, my master told me that you will be the one to kill me and how you will kill me." Ibn Ziyad told Maytham, he said, "Well, what did he say your master, this master Ali Ibn Abi Talib? Give me the details."

Maytham said, "he told me that I would be crucified on this palm tree." Subhana Allah, he used to come to this palm tree every day, water it, then pray two rakaʿat right next to it, and then he would say to the tree that, "you were created for me and I for you." They would say, "Ya Maytham, what are you talking about?." He said, "My master akhbarani sayyidi habibi, Amir Al-Mu'minin (as) that I will be hanging from this tree one day. I will die on this tree. So I'm looking after it."

Maytham says to Ibn Ziyad. He said to him, "my master, told me that you will cut off my arm and my leg. You will leave me to bleed. You will hang me on this tree, you'll crucify me. Then you will leave me for three days. On the third day you will cut off my tongue. And then when the disc of the sun begins to disappear in the horizon, that's when I will join my master Ali ibn Abi Talib (as) and that's when I'll die."

Ibn Ziyad told him,"in that case", he told the torturer; the executioner; he said to him, "Go hang him on that tree. That's a great idea. Hang him, crucify him, nail him and then cut off his the alternate leg and the arm. So one leg, one arm and then leave him there to die of bleeding, but do not cut off his tongue. I'll prove to everyone that Ali (as) was a liar.

They took Maytham al-Tammar; they nailed him to the tree. They cut off his hand and his arm. You know, one of the things that happens when someone bleeds profusely is they become really thirsty.

Bi abi anta wa ummi ya Aba Abdillah. He's thirsty. His tongue is dry, but instead of pleading for help, what did he say? He started to scream, "Ya ahlal Kufa. Ta'alu, ukhbirukum 'an mawlaya wa mawlaakum Amir Al-Mu'minin (as)" "Come, I want to share with you the virtues of Ali (as). This is a minbar that's been given to me right now, an opportunity to speak about the virtues of my master and your master. Let me tell you what Rasul Allah (S) said about Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as)."

He began to list the virtues of Amir Al-Mu'minin (as), one by one, by one. Until the third day, they came to Ibn Ziyad. They said to him, "do you realise what you've done? He's about to flip Kufa. The Kufans are about to revolt against you. He's he's never stopped. He hasn't ceased to speak of the merits of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as) for the last three days." He said, "in that case, go cut off his tongue." When the executioner approached him, he said, "stick your tongue out."

He said, "Subhana Allah, does the bastard child of Ibn Marjana think he can make my master Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as) a liar? Sadaqa mawlaya Amir Al-Mu'minin (as)!" He took his tongue, he cut it off and as he was cutting off the tongue, Maytham was looking at the disc of the sun as soon as half of the disc disappeared he also joined his master, Amir Al-Mu'minin (as).
