What Does Islam Say About Bad Luck?
Now to believe that some things can bring you bad luck, like a black cat, or a crow with a number 13, or a broken mirror or I don't know what. This goes against two things in Islam: a belief and a practice. This contradicts the idea of bad luck, that sort of thing that bring bad luck. This contradicts an Islamic belief and an Islamic practice. The Islamic belief is that the only thing that the only authority in this world is whom? Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala.
How can a broken mirror have an effect on your life? Or on your marriage, or on your journey? How can it have an effect? Or a crow, or a black cat, or the number 13? The only authority in this life is Allah, Subhana wa Ta'ala. La Mu'aththira fi 'l-wujood illa Allah.
These things have no effect. There is a hadith by Rasul Allah, salla Allahu alayhi wa alihi, that says [Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa Aali Muhammad]: he who is affected by bad luck. Meaning, for example, if he sees a black cat, he thinks it is bad luck. So he stops doing what he is doing. He doesn't get married, he doesn't go on a journey, he doesn't start that business. The Prophet says this is a form of Shirk, this is a form of Shirk, because you think that that black cat or that crow or that broken mirror or the number 13 will have an effect on you. That's ridiculous. The only One that can have an effect on you is Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. So this is one. It contradicts an Islamic belief.
And number two, it contradicts an Islamic practice. And that's Tawakkul. Tawakkul 'ala Allah. You're about to get married, a mirror breaks. You stop? Where is the Tawakkul? We are told in Islam to depend on Allah and only Allah, and not to be afraid, not to worry. Depend only on Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. "Wa 'ala Allahi fa 'l-yatawakkal al-Mu'minoon". "In yansurkumu Allahu fala ghaliba lakum wa in yakhdhulkum faman dhalladhee yansurukum min ba'dih; wa 'ala Allahi fa 'l-yatawakkal al-Mu'minoon" (3:160). If Allah supports you, then no one can harm you. And if Allah does not support you, if Allah neglects you, then no one can support you.
And believers should depend on Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. Depend on Allah. Don't pay attention to things that you think will bring bad luck. There's no such thing. This is superstition. This is nonsense. Depend on Allah. "Qul lan yuseebana illa ma'a kataba Allahu lana, Huwa mawlana; wa 'ala Allahi fa 'l-yatawakkal al-Mu'minoon"(9:51). This is a concurrent theme in the Qur'an that we should depend on Allah. We should do to Tawakkul. We shouldn't pay attention to these things that we think bring bad luck. "Qul lan yuseebana illa ma'a kataba Allahu lana" (9:51). Say that nothing will happen to us unless it has been destined by Allah to happen to us.
If it has been destined, it will happen. If not, you think that a broken mirror has an effect on you? Or the number 13 has an effect on you? Absolutely not. You might say, well, once you know it actually happened, something brought me bad luck. I saw a bad sign and indeed something bad happened to me. A mirror was broken and indeed that brought me bad luck. When I saw the number 13, I travelled on, for example, Friday the 13th and I got in an accident on that day. It happened. It's real. No, it is not real.
Why? The Imam tells us, Imam Sadiq. He says that sometimes these things that you think bring bad luck, it has a psychological effect. It has a psychological effect. So if you, for example see a broken mirror and you think it will bring you bad luck, you will translate a lot of things in a negative way.
If at the beginning of your marriage you think that this marriage is bad luck, for some reason. You will give up on the marriage because thinking that this marriage is doomed anyway, that is why you will not make an effort, you will not make an effort to fix that marriage and you will say yes, that marriage was bad luck or so and so brought me bad luck. No, it wasn't bad luck, but it had a psychological effect on you. You gave up, you translated certain things to believe that had bad luck, rather didn't have bad luck.
Imam as-Sadiq, alayhi as-salam says, "At-tayra 'aIa ma taja'laha Inha wanta tahwuonat. Bad luck, it depends on how you treat it. If you don't pay attention to it, nothing will have bad luck. But if you pay attention to it, if you think about it, then yes, it will have a bad effect on you. Meaning what? It is all in the head. It is all in your mind. Will you allow it to have an effect on you or you don't allow it to have an effect on you? It is all in the head. It is all in the mind. Sallu 'ala Muhammad wa aali Muhammad [Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa Aali Muhammad].
If you are afraid of bad luck, if you're afraid that some things will bring you bad luck, the hadith say, then the cure is Tawakkul, at-Tawakkul 'ala Allah. Depend on Allah. In of your deeds and all of your actions. You'ì are afraid of this, you are afraid of that. You are afraid that this will bring you a bad luck. You are afraid of certain dreams, they mean bad luck. No. Depend on Allah. Do everything for Allah.
Credere che alcune cose possano portare sfortuna, come un gatto nero, o un corvo con il numero 13, o uno specchio rotto o non so cosa, e' contrario a due cose nell'Islam: una credenza e una pratica. Queste cose non hanno alcun effetto. C'è un hadith di Rasul Allah, salla Allahu alayhi wa alihi, che dice [Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa Aali Muhammad]: colui che è colpito dalla sfortuna, cioè, ad esempio, se vede un gatto nero, pensa che porti sfortuna. Così smette di fare quello che sta facendo. Non si sposa, non parte per un viaggio, non inizia un'attività. Il Profeta dice che questa è una forma di Shirk, una forma di Shirk, perché pensate che quel gatto nero o quel corvo o quello specchio rotto o il numero 13 avranno un effetto su di voi. È ridicolo. L'unico che può avere un effetto su di voi è Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. Quindi questo è uno. È in contraddizione con una credenza islamica.
E secondo, contraddice una pratica islamica. E questa è il Tawakkul. Tawakkul 'ala Allah. Stai per sposarti e si rompe uno specchio. Ti fermi? Dov'è il Tawakkul? Nell'Islam ci viene detto di dipendere da Allah e solo da Allah, di non avere paura, di non preoccuparci. Dipendere solo da Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. "Wa 'ala Allahi fa 'l-yatawakkal al-Mu'minoon". I credenti devono dipendere da Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. Dipendi da Allah! Non prestate attenzione alle cose che pensate portino sfortuna. Non esistono cose del genere. Questa è superstizione. Sono sciocchezze. Dipendi da Allah. "Qul lan yuseebana illa ma'a kataba Allahu lana, Huwa mawlana; wa 'ala Allahi fa 'l-yatawakkal al-Mu'minoon" (9:51). Questo è un tema ricorrente nel Corano: dobbiamo dipendere da Allah. Dovremmo fare il Tawakkul. Non dovremmo prestare attenzione a queste cose che pensiamo portino sfortuna. "Qul lan yuseebana illa ma'a kataba Allahu lana" (9:51). Diciamo che non ci accadrà nulla se non è stato destinato da Allah ad accadere a noi.
Se è stato destinato, accadrà. Altrimenti, pensate che uno specchio rotto abbia un effetto su di voi? O che il numero 13 abbia un effetto su di voi? Assolutamente no. Potreste dire: "Beh, quando saprete che è successo davvero, qualcosa mi ha portato sfortuna. Ho visto un brutto segno e mi è successo qualcosa di brutto. Si è rotto uno specchio e questo mi ha portato sfortuna. Quando ho visto il numero 13, ho viaggiato, per esempio, il venerdì 13 e ho avuto un incidente in quel giorno. È successo. È reale. No, non è reale.
Perché? Ce lo dice l'Imam Sadiq. Dice che a volte queste cose che si pensa portino sfortuna, hanno un effetto psicologico. Hanno un effetto psicologico. Se, ad esempio, vedete uno specchio rotto e pensate che vi porterà sfortuna, tradurrete molte cose in modo negativo.
Se all'inizio del vostro matrimonio pensate che questo matrimonio sia sfortunato, per qualche motivo. Rinuncerete al matrimonio perché pensando che questo matrimonio è comunque condannato, non vi sforzerete, non vi sforzerete di sistemare quel matrimonio e direte: sì, quel matrimonio è stato una sfortuna o questo o quello mi ha portato sfortuna. No, non è stata una sfortuna, ma ha avuto un effetto psicologico su di voi. Vi siete arresi, avete tradotto certe cose in modo da credere che avessero portato sfortuna, piuttosto che non avessero avuto sfortuna.
L'Imam as-Sadiq, alayhi as-salam dice: "At-tayra 'aIa ma taja'laha Inha wanta tahwuonat". La sfortuna dipende da come la si tratta. Se non ci si fa caso, non c'è niente che porti sfortuna. Ma se ci fate caso, se ci pensate, allora sì, avrà un effetto negativo su di voi. Che cosa significa? È tutto nella testa. È tutto nella vostra mente. Permettete che abbia un effetto su di voi o non permettete che abbia un effetto su di voi? È tutto nella testa. È tutto nella mente. Sallu 'ala Muhammad wa aali Muhammad [Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa Aali Muhammad].
Se avete paura della sfortuna, se temete che alcune cose vi portino sfortuna, dicono gli hadith, allora la cura è Tawakkul, at-Tawakkul 'ala Allah. Dipendere da Allah. In tutte le tue azioni e in tutti i tuoi atti. Avete paura di questo, avete paura di quello. Hai paura che questo ti porti sfortuna. Hai paura di certi sogni, che significano sfortuna. No. Dipendi da Allah. Fa tutto per Allah.
