Sharik narrated to us from Abu Yazid al-Awdi, from his father who said: Abu Hurayra entered the mosque and we gathered around him. A young man stood up and said: I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah say: Of whomsoever I am master (mawla), `Ali is his master. O Allah, befriend one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who shows enmity to him?
He said: Yes. The young man said: I am quit of you. I bear witness that you have been at enmity with those who befriended him and befriended those who are at enmity with him.
He said: So the people threw pebbles on him.
