Backbiting

Backbiting, backstabbing, or tale-bearing is to slander someone in their absence — to bite them behind their back.

You should avoid mentioning any bad act or bad habit of a believer. Speaking generally about your work is allowed but never mention any bad thing done by a believer.

Adding on the number of the listeners can be a sort of support for the backbiting which is wrong.

If you haven't already, and if you are comfortable doing so, you could try telling her that you feel hurt and uncomfortable when she says bad things about your dad or family. That might be more effective than telling her she is committing a sin.

Usually, it is considered irresponsible for a father or mother to say bad things about each other to the children (unless it is an urgent or important issue) because it is psychologically and emotionally harmful and makes the children feel a conflict of loyalty between them.

You should never support nor accept backbiting because it is a major sin, but on the same time you must keep the respect of your mother and avoid hurting her feelings. Keeping these two duties needs your wisdom. Stopping her from backbiting can come from making her realize that by backbiting those whom she's not like, she will loose her good deeds which will go  to them, and might also get the burden of their bad deeds. You should be very polite in talking to your mother and never look like trying to teach her. You can tell her stories and narrations from the Prophet (SAWA) and Ahlul Bayt (AS).

If you boss is a Mo'min, you must avoid criticising him unless he is doing obvious injustice on you and you will be then not allowed to talk about anything away from your suffering from his injustice. You should not mention any other thing about him which not part of your suffering.

Gheebat (Backbiting) of a believer is a major sin.
Regarding talking bad about non believers, we should not waste our valuable time in talking bad about others except the enemies of Allah who were been cursed by Allah and His Messenger.

If it is necessary for your work, it is not backbiting. Writing for publication is a public activity, and anything written and presented publicly can be discussed in an honest and sincere way.

It is better to say that it is poor quality in the beginning than to publish poor quality material and be an embarrassment to Islam and Muslims.

However it is good to be tactful and choose nice ways to phrase your criticisms since writing is a very sensitive subject. Perhaps some tips on how it could be improved might also be useful.

It is not obligatory on non Baligh child to seek forgiveness for acts committed by him during his childhood. It is good to seek forgiveness from them if you can. It is also good to pray to Allah to forgive you and them as well.

You need to seek forgiveness and pardon from them. If you are unable to do that then seek forgiveness from Allah to forgive you and them and keep praying for them.

Although you might have been young, but you must have known that talking ill about someone is a bad thing. If this person is still alive, and you do see him, greet him, and just say 'forgive me if I have wronged you', without going into details.

I am sure he wont comment on anything, and answer in a positive way, and your conscience will be clear, in shaa Allah.

With prayers for your success.

Rules of Gheebat are same but if the matter is related to your children or any one who is under your responsibility, you can discuss the matter to avoid them harm or risk.

Backbiting is defined by a Hadeeth narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) as : Mentioning your brother by a matter which he dislikes to be mentioned. A person asked the Prophet: Even if I mention a real matter in him? The Prophet replied: If you mention a real matter which does not like to be mentioned, yoy have committed backbiting him, and if you mention a matter which does not exist in him, you have put allegation on him.

Allegation is obviously more dangerous major sin.

Backbiting is a bad habit in any way. Backbiting a believer is a major sin. Backbiting any one is a bad act unless you want to warn people from a possible harm from a person.

Wassalam.
