Najis

In Islamic law, najis (Arabic: نجس‎) means ritually unclean. According to Islam, there are two kinds of najis: the essential najis which cannot be cleaned and the unessential najis which become najis while in contact with another najis. Contact with najis things brings a Muslim into a state of ritual impurity (Arabic: نجاسة‎ najāsa, in opposition to ṭahārah, ritual purity). Ritual purification is then required before religious duties such as regular prayers are performed.

I knew I was wearing something that was Najis but didn’t realize the impurity was transferring to my body when I washed myself in the bathroom. I changed my clothes when I prayed but did not realize my body was Najis while praying. Is my prayer valid?

Doubting whether the Najasat has transferred to your body or cloth or not, does not make your body or cloth Najis. You can consider everything as Tahir unless and until you know for sure that it is Najis.

'If you are sure that you performed a Prayer while your body or cloth were Najis, then you need to be Tahir and perform that Prayer again.

Shoes . Najis . Urine . Taharah (Purity) . Clothing

If my shoes become Najis from animal urine or suchlike on the road and get dry by themselves, what is rule for purity when later water drops fall on them and my clothes touch the shoes with that wetness?

If the down side of the shoes becomes Najis, then walk ten steps after removal of the Najis item, lower part of the shoes becomes Tahir.

'If the upper part of the shoes becomes Najis, you must wash it with water after removing the Najis item if any.

I am not sure if the ground at my school is Najis and sometimes in PE outside or during break I sit on the ground. Do my clothes or part of my body become impure?

No. Everything is Tahir for you until you know for sure that it is Najis. As you are not sure that the ground is Najis, you can consider it as Tahir.

If my clothes became Najis because they came into contact and were contaminated with pork, how many times do I need to wash them so they become pure and I can wear them while performing prayers?

Such clothes need to be washed with water like washing any other Najis clothes, then it will become Taahir.

Plates and vessels contaminated by dog need to be washed first with soil, then with pure water, but this rule is not for clothes.

Plates or vessels contaminated with pig or dead rat need to washed with water seven times. That is not for clothes.

Najis

There is a surface and a small part of it is Najis while the rest is Tahir, but I don't know which part is the Najis one. If a wet object touches such a surface, does it become Najis if one does not know whether it touched the Najis section?

This situation is called in jurisprudence a limited doubt شُبهة محصورة which means that you are sure that a part within a limited parts is Najis but you don't know which one. In this case you must avoid all the parts within the known limits.

My friend has a big dog and she brings it when we hang out. Would my clothes or body become Najis if I pet or play with the dog although it isn't wet?

If you touch a Najis item e.g. a dog, with wetness, then your touching part of your body or cloth becomes Najis and needs to be washed with water to be Taahir. If you touch a dog or any Najis item with out wetness, then your body of cloth is not Najis.

For health precaution, you are advised not to touch a dog even with dry hands because of the possibility of transfer of microbes or parasites from the dog to your body. I sometimes get doubts about my state of purity from when I go to the toilet. I try to analyze what happened and try and most of the time come to the conclusion that nothing Najis got on me, but I still get doubts. Am I considered ritually clean?

Simply, everything is Taahir for you unless and until you know for sure that it is Najis. This is a rule in jurisprudence based on a narration of Ammar from Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq (AS) stating : Everything is ritually clean till you know that it is ritually unclean. (Wasaa'il al-Shia, V.2, Section 37 on Nijasah).

Your doubt in this matter does not make any difference. You are ritually clean because you are just doubting and not sure that your body became Najis.

The simple rule of thumb is because you are doubting, you consider it all to be tahir. Nothing more.

If one gets a drop of urine on his body, is it sufficient to use a showerhead or water hose to wash the Najis area twice? And is drying off the water required?

If my hands are Najis and I am washing them, would the wash basin also become Najis as a result?

Provided that the Najis item (e.g. blood, urine etc) is no more existing in the washing basin, and you use tab water, the washing basin is not Najis.

Does touching something Najis break one's Wudhu? If so, does it apply when wet or dry? What about touching something that is dirty but not Najis, is it then necessary to wash my hands?

Touching something will not break one's wudhu`, unless it is the touching of a dead human body after it gets cold, and before it is washed.

For anything else, najis or not, just touching it will not break wudhu`. Of course, if it is wet, and your hand gets contaminated with najasah, all you need to do is wash it.

As for touching something dirty, the same thing, and no, from a shar'i perspective it is not necessary to 'wash' your hands if it is just dirty and not najis.
