It is not allowed for a Muslim to hit any one including his wife or children. Some people misunderstand a Quranic verse in this regard which in fact does not mean real hitting but not more than a nominal act to correct. If a person hit his wife and her skin becomes reddish, he must pay her a penalty, beside his sinful act which needs seeking her pardon and forgiveness from Allah (SWT).
