Sawm (Fasting)

Fasting in Islam, (known as Sawm (صَوْم) or Siyām (صِيَام), also commonly known as Rūzeh or Rōzah (Persian: روزه‎)), is the practice of abstaining, usually from food, drink, smoking, and sexual activity. During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan Sawm is observed between dawn and sunset when the evening adhan is sounded.

No fasting during menstruation period. Minimum period of menstrual cycle bleeding is three continuous days and maximum is ten days. Any bleeding less than three days is not menstruation and she has to fast and pray Salah.

If a fasting person has medicine prescribed that can't be taken before Suhur or after Iftar, how should they act?

If he needs to take necessary medicine during the day, then his fast will be invalid and he must keep it later as Qadha.

it is important for everyone to celebrate 'Id by going masjid and pray Salat al-'Id.

If a person did not fast due to valid excuses and fasting would have lead him to unbearable hardship, he should give a fidiyah for every day that he has missed. Otherwise, if he did not fast and he did not have valid excuses, he should ask forgiveness and pay kaffarah.

Thank you for your question. With many of the issues in the sections on worship in Islamic law we do not necessarily understand the logic of the rulings as Islamic law is not derived that way (through independent rational speculation). It is derived from an examination of the scriptural sources according to methods that are discussed extensively in the science of the principles of jurisprudence. Sometimes, we can have an idea of the wisdom behind certain rulings, but in many cases, our actions are based on the purport of those sources.

This is one such case in which the logic is not known, but it could be rationally inferred that perhaps the wisdom behind it is that since the time of travel is earlier, and since God doesn't want the traveller to go through too much difficulty, they are required to break their fast, whereas if a person travels after zuhur the time till breaking fast is less and so it is not so difficult for them to complete it and therefore they are required to do so.

What is the right time to break Sawm, is it immediately after Maghrib Adhaan or later at night, and if so, how much later?

The time of breaking the fast is immediately on Maghrib time which is the start of the night according to Quran. (Then complete fasting till night) 2:187

It is recommended to pray Maghrib Prayer then break the fast.

What happens when couples get intimate at night but don't do the ritual bath until very close to Fajr before performing the prayer? Would the fast have technically started by then and, if so, what is the consequence?

It is compulsory on every one of them to perform Ghusl of Janabah latest before Fajr (Dawn) time. Remaining deliberately on the state of Janabah will invalidate the fast and cause a major sin with all its sequences which are Qadha of the fast of that day and Kaffara of feeding sixty poor persons or fasting two months. Ghusl must be performed before the time of Fajr.

Brushing teeth does not harm your fast as far as you are sure that you will not swallow any drop of water of any other material like tooth paste etc. while brushing or before or after brushing your teeth.

I have not fasted for last 6 years of Ramadan and I was not sick or in any situation that exempted me. Where do I start from and how do I go about making up what is due on me?

Simply, start after the Month of Ramadhan making up (Qadha) of all the days which you missed and you must also pay Kaffara of ever day you deliberately missed by feeding 60 poor believers for every day of missed fast.
